Critical Evaluation of Fluoride

By Kimberly Meredith

For several decades, increasing numbers of municipalities throughout the United States have been fluoridating their water, ostensibly for the purposes of reducing the rate of tooth decay. However, most of Western Europe does not have fluoridated water, yet their rate of tooth decay is no higher than in the United States.

There is also evidence that fluoride can pose various health risks. Fluoride can cause harm to proteins in soft tissues, including the blood, brain, and liver, where it can penetrate cellular membranes. Some scientific research has also linked fluoride with lower IQ in children. Various groups have raised additional concerns that fluoride may be associated with a number of other diseases and health conditions.

There is also a concern of over-fluoridation, where people are exposed to too much fluoride. Because fluoride is present in so many products, in addition to water and toothpaste, it can be very easy for an individual to be exposed to far more fluoride than is necessary, even for the purpose of cavity reduction.

Because both fluoride and aluminum can pass through the blood-brain barrier—the structure that protects the brain from toxins—an additional concern arises for those who have fluoridated water and who cook in aluminum pots. There is a possibility that the fluoride in the water can combine with the aluminum in the pot and form aluminum fluoride.

Aluminum and aluminum fluoride can combine with oxygen to form aluminum oxide—a compound found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, and is also associated with osteoporosis, osteomalacia, spontaneous bone fractures, and dementia.

For those who have fluoridated water, I recommend cooking with—and drinking—quality spring water. Cooking with glass or stainless steel is preferable to aluminum or Teflon.

For those who are interested in fluoride for cavity prevention, consider alternative toothpastes that contain a new generation of materials that can replace lost tooth enamel. For example, select toothpastes contain a special form of hydroxyapatite— the material that comprises tooth enamel—to rebuild tooth enamel in those at risk of, or experiencing, tooth decay. ?
